FREE SPEECH, HATE SPEECH, FAITH SPEECH

Free speech is a cornerstone of modern democracy, but what happens when an individual’s right to free speech impinges on the rights and dignity of others? In this lecture, three UEA academics each give a short, TED-style talk – Professor Rachel Potter on the subject of free speech, Dr Alex Brown on the subject of hate speech, and Professor Lee Marsden on one of his areas of research: faith speech.

BRITISH VALUES

‘British values’ is a term often used in the media and by politicians, but what is really meant by it? What makes British values different from those of other nations, and are we being inclusive of all sections of society (including faith groups) when we use it? Bishop of Norwich Graham James, UEA academic Dr Eylem Atakav, Bishop of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Steve Carruthers and Rabbi Roderick Young share their perspectives in this roundtable discussion chaired by Rt Hon Charles Clarke.

IN CONVERSATION WITH STEPHEN TIMMS MP

Politicians are charged with representing the views of their constituents, but they are also individuals with views and values. What happens when a politician's personal or religious convictions conflict with popular opinion?

Rt Hon Charles Clarke interviews Labour politician, Stephen Timms, who has been the MP for East Ham since 1997. Stephen and Charles discuss the current political landscape in Britain, with particular reference to the contemporary place of religion in society. Stephen draws on examples from his own political career and explains how his political life is informed by his own faith as an evangelical Christian.
